Judge's Statement
The work of Anna Miarczynska is extremely well executed and bravely feminine. I say this because, at least in the U.S., there is a tendency for women artists to veer away from imagery that is obviously female, in favor of more masculine subjects and styles. At least half the world is female, but in my country we've been taught that the European masters of old (all male) define high art--and we act accordingly.
Anna, however, doesn't apologize for being a woman. She celebrates it; boldly sharing her internal and very spiritual world. I could write several paragraphs about the nature of her work, but wouldn't you rather hear the artist's words? London journalist Jolita Asmara Kelias has posted an interview with Anna on her blog.
