Judge's Statement
Ashley Shellhause entered Accretion, Fragmented II and Simultaneous Systems II. Her images are unusual in that they resemble etchings but are, in fact, primarily acrylics. The images themselves seem to speak of nature at a microcosmic level. The lines in Simultaneous Systems II remind one of a cellular web of tissue. The structures in Accretion remind one of crystals. Mimesis in Growth seems to speak of "cells" found within electronics, mimicking our own.
Her works are large in scale, which is significant only if it lends meaning to the work. In this case it does seem to imply that we are literally surrounded by a world too complex for us to comprehend at any given time.
