Donna Brumbergs
Second Annual National Invitational finalist
Judge's Statement
Every now and then, one spots a painting that appears inspired. When I look at Winter in Bryant Park, I feel the artist's excitement for the scene. The paint is applied energetically -- as if there's no time to waste before the snow melts. The palette is limited -- black, red, yellow, and blue, with some smudging to suggest reflected color. The artist doesn't have time to mix paint. She's trying to capture the essence of what's before her.
I recognized the San Antonio riverwalk immediately. It's amazing how little information Donna provides to suggest very recognizable locations. And although I didn't recognize the entry To the Blue Room, this painting impressed me with its daring simplicity. As I gaze at it, I find myself wondering what's beyond the red wall.
I enjoy the sense of movement in Rain on Heidelberg and Lights On in the Latin Corner; the movement of light in Italian Coast.
In all of her works, Donna gives us just enough information to keep things lively.
