Judge's Statement

Frank Myers entered three images: Cafe du Monde, Bourbon Street, and St. Charles St. Streetcar. Are his works photographs? Digital manipulations? Paintings? I lean toward the latter. Frank takes a digital photograph, and then places a screen over the original image using Corel Painter. The screen essentially fades the image; it now resembles an outline of the original composition. Frank then layers colors onto the screen using the digital brushes and pencils available to him. The result is a digitized impressionistic painting.

I believe that what when we look at art, we're really looking for a connection with another human being--to see our surroundings through fresh eyes. When we look at Frank's creations we see a vibrant, pulsating world. We can almost hear the chatter at the Cafe du Mond, the bagpipes in the St. Patrick's Day parade, and the music at the Carrboro Music Festival. The groupings in Bourbon Street give us a sense of controlled confusion.

Be sure to check out Frank's web site, where you can see more of his digital hybrids and some stunning digital photography.
