Grzegorz Czarnecki
Second Annual National Invitational finalist
Judge's Statement
Orcas stood out among Grzegorz Czarnecki's marquetry pieces. At forty-two inches wide, its scale is impressive. But what fascinates me is the brave decision to tilt the horizon line, so that it creates a strong diagonal. The tilting helps the whales appear to be in motion.
The artist also uses the grain of the wood to enhance his images. In this case, wood with an even, horizontal grain lends a sense of peace to the clouds. Wood with a jagged grain is used for the water, giving the appearance of a choppy current.
I'm also quite taken with Sunset, which shows a pod of dolphins breaching the waves. The use of the wood grain makes the water appear to be churning. The selection for the mountain causes it to appear weatherworn.
