Judge's Statement
Kjetil Vatne entered three works, including Quiet City 1 and Quiet City 2. All of his works have a deeply introspective quality. Each shows an isolated person in a highly populated, yet empty world. The dark compositions make the cities depicted to appear barren; lifeless. Quiet City 2 is my personal favorite. A man walks alone through a pedestrian tunnel, part of and yet separated from, the greater city beyond. In short, Kjetil's work seems to speak about the difficulty of becoming part of a community, in a world filled with people but devoid of life. His work speaks to anyone who has found themselves lost in the urban environment.
