Judge's Statement
In judging a show, I'm always looking for that one piece that holds my eye captive; that single work that forces my mind into a meditative state. This time, it was Lee Weiland's Dust that immediately drew me in and held me in a state of wonder.
The brightest part of this very large painting, the subject's orblike left eye, anchors the viewer to the piece. The flowing lines of the subject's dreadlocks and unexplained patterning across the skin lead the viewer's eyes across the canvas, before returning them once more to the area of focus. The features of the face are well defined, but are framed by organic forms that hint at definition, before merging with one another and fading into nothingness. Aqua and blue circles suggest beads or sunspots, but moreover are stylized compositional elements which also lead the eye.
I'm also captivated by Lee's entry Regeneration, showing an angel having a modern, dramatic flare. The angel seems to beckon to us. We look into its face for a message, peer through the locks of hair, and find that angel's right eye is focussed directly on us. But its expression is noncommittal, leaving us to ponder its heavenly message.
Be sure to visit Lee's web site. In addition to his figurative work, he is exhibiting some exceptional abstract pieces.
