Michael Anthony Lawrence
Second Annual National Invitational finalist
Judge's Statement
Michael Anthony Lawrence's Irish eyes caught my attention immediately. Laugh lines around the subject's eyes form an arrow, pointing us toward a pair of dark, sparkling eyes. The flesh across the forehead is mottled. The skin on the hand thin and creased. There's no idealism here; only a deep appreciation for what is. And what is is wonderful indeed.
The artist gives us a satisfying range of tones - from a rich black in the background, an assortment of grays in the skin, to bits of brilliant white in the eyes, teeth, and collar. Such a variety in a graphite drawing is more the rarity than the norm, and helps the subject seem more solid; more alive.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of this artist's work in the future.
