Judge's Statement

Ron Hoyle was also a finalist in our National Invitational. He entered the International Art Competition with fresh images of workmen constructing skyscrapers.  I'm particularly fond of Booming Down. The dramatic angles and heaviness of the metal beams contrast nicely with the billowing clouds and lightly stepping figure. The combination makes us feel as though we're one with the subject, floating precariously above the earth.

Pondering My Values immediately caught my attention when it was entered in the national competition. The subject’s pose looks natural. Details such as the stretched neck of the T-shirt, the tattoo wrapping the figure’s neck, and the hairs on the figure’s arm lend interest to the drawing; believability to the subject. The high-resolution photograph Ron submitted allowed me to enjoy the sensitive rendering found throughout the piece. The scale is small, which seems appropriate for such personal imagery.

Like Pondering My Values, His drawing Mike shows great textural variation. The eyes look clear and alert; the moustache coarse; the skin pliable. I like the minor details, such as the hint of a lanyard about the subject’s neck and the unbuttoned collar.

Ron’s work displays skillful draftsmanship, as well as true appreciation for the people he so lovingly captures.
