Starr Weems
Second Annual National Invitational finalist
Judge's Statement
Starr Weems submitted three images, two of which are presented here -- Candling and My Chicken and I.
In Candling, the chosen egg seems to glow. The brightest yellows in the piece are found in the hand and egg, and these play against the complementary purples and violets in the background.
At first glance, the eggs in the bottom of the basket appear to be painted with a flat gray. But they are actually constructed with washes of color -- yellow, orange, violet, and blue-green.
The basket and its parts are outlined, as are the eggs and hand. The reliance on line to define form gives the piece a charming, folk-art quality.
I also find Plans for Pancakes captivating. The complementary colors seem to pulse. Strong diagonals give the piece movement. Outlined forms and a slightly distorted perspective lend honesty and charm.
This artist's work has an illustrative quality, and each work seems to relate a personal tale.
