Judge's Statement
Thomas Matthew Pierson submitted two drawings to the competition, Weight Straps and Pause. I was immediately drawn to Weight Straps and it's unusual cropping. We can't see the subject's eyes, but get the impression from the shifting shoulder and pursed lips that the man is about to speak to us. The rendering is energetic and varied. The charcoal appears to have been applied rapidly, and then lifted or smeared in places with an eraser. Thin, dark lines define the sleeve and arm. I don't know the conditions under which it was drawn, but I can almost feel the artist's absorption in the moment as he sketched.
