Judge's Statement
Tom Acevedo submitted two entries, Breaking the Bonds and his winning entry, Letting Go. I was immediately captured by the personal nature of his images. They seem to make an autobiographical statement. Yet, in spite of its personal nature, his work relays a struggle with life's trials and burdens that is universally sensed and understood. His draftsmanship and painting skills are excellent and his compositions intriguing. In Letting Go, I was mesmerized by his subject's believable, and yet exaggerated, twisting pose. Although Tom's subject matter is sometimes disturbing, it never crosses the line--never becomes offensive. When judging a show, the last questions I ask are, "Which would I hang on my own wall? Which could I look at day after day, without getting bored?" Tom's work is exciting, well crafted, and likely to draw thew viewer in time and time again.
